Monkey Mania Game

I created all assets for this touch screen game. The idea is similar to Whack-A-Mole, where you must touch the various positions of the monkey in the jungle. All assets were created in 3D in Maya; the monkey itself was rigged and animated in Maya, and post was in Photoshop & After Effects.

Charcoal Sketch

An old charcoal sketch from a photograph of an old man. The detail you can get out of charcoal is amazing. I have yet to incorporate it into some imagined characters/creatures/environments. It is a little messy though, but that's not always necessarily a bad thing. I like the tactile feeling of drawing on paper; wacom's felt nibs for their stylus' give you more friction while working on a tablet, but I don't think they'll ever match the sensation of working traditionally. You also end up with a tangible piece of art, whereas with digital, everything's virtual unless printed. What do you think? Leave a comment & let me know.

Charley Harper

I made this one for an old assignment where we had to take a Charley Harper illustration and re-create it in Adobe Illustrator with vectors. I remember the instructor didn't mind the twist I added, and even gave me extra points for it! The original piece (top) is entitled "Backscratching in the Baboondocks" and my version (below) is "Backstabbing in the Baboondocks." If you don't know who Charley Harper is, definitely check out his website. He had a very vivid, minimalist style of illustrating nature and much of his work is timeless in that it looks like modern graphic design created on Illustrator. The moral of my take on his illustration is to "watch your back," especially in the boondocks.

I did this on an old homework assignment. I found myself drawing sketches in the margins of my homework my whole life. I remember watching a video on youtube one day by Bobby Chiu talking about how he was always drawing in the margins too. I picked up his book, "Guy Sketches" and found pages filled with these...face blobs? Which version do you like? The original or the inverted?

Sketched in pencil, then painted in Photoshop. I'm trying more and more every day to successfully tell a story through an image. It's really incredible how much story some artists can get across through a single image, sometimes subtly, sometimes descriptively. I can just practice, practice, and keep practicing to hopefully get to their level one day.

I made this a while back for a CD cover. I've always been a fan of all kinds of artwork including graffiti, and have seen some really inspiring murals in the bay area from Oakland to San Francisco. The late legend, Mike "Dream" Francisco, stands out although I've never met in person, but admired his work growing up in the Bay.

This is my late in the game sketchblog, sculptblog, ideablog, and all around artblog where I'll be putting up drawings, illustrations, sculpture, cg art, random thoughts, and anything creative as a means to not just create the final outcome, but to learn through the process of creation. Like that saying, it's not all about the final destination, but the journey that takes you there, which applies as much to art as it does to travel. I've seen so many inspirational artists online (links to the right), and I've seen artists progress and develop in their respective artforms online, that I feel it's necessary to get the artblogging going late in the game. Better late than never.
